A man from a village near He Yuan in South China's Guangdong Province was convicted October 23, 2006 of murdering ten people in nine separate incidents, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

Zhang Youtian, 38, had little education, and lured his victims, mostly female migrant workers, by offering them rides on his motorbike as they were returning hometown from work. The killings were macabre, and included a pregnant woman and a mental patient.

He finally turned his knife on his wife and a man who shared the house with them.

Zhang was arrested in February is now awaiting sentencing.

Guangdong, as one of China's economic hubs has been seeing increasing demand for labor and a corresponding rise in the violation of migrant worker's property and legal rights. Experts call for the establishment of an effective mechanism to protect migrant worker's rights in the interests of fostering a harmonious society.
