A man surnamed Wu was recently detained by police after he kidnapped his former wife for the return of his dowry in the city of Danzhou of South China's Hainan Province.

Wu and Chen, both farmers in the city's Dongcheng Township, married in March 2005. Chen filed a lawsuit for divorce in May allegedly because of their incompatible natures.

Wu then kidnapped Chen and forced her parents to refund his dowry, valued at 2,500 yuan (US$312.5), after local court approved his wife's divorce application early this month.

Local police said Wu would be prosecuted for kidnapping.
