"Nanjing", means "South Capital" in China,with a history of 2500 years, Nanjing is an ancient beautiful city. Located on the vast plains of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, covering 6,598 square kilometers. Nanjing governs eleven districts and two counties with a population totaling 6.4 million. Nanjing History dates back to the 3rd century BC, ten dynasties or regimes made Nanjing their Capital numerous times. These events have lead to a gorgeous and splendid historical & cultural inheritance. In the past Nanjing held six Dynasties, the Ming Dynasty the Qing Dynasty and the Republican Period. Nowadays Nanjing is the Capital city of Jiangsu Province and is one of the four Central cities along the Yangtze River. Jiangsu is a modern developed Province of China whose comprehensive and competitive ability ranks the 6th domestically.

Location

Lying at 32 degrees 3 north latitude and 118 degrees 47 east longitude, Nanjing is located in the middle of two Coastal Economic Zones, the Coastal Economic Zone and the Yangtze River Economic Delta. Currently the Yangtze Economic Zone is ranked 6th in the world, making Nanjing one of the three leading cities of the megalopolis in the Yangtze River Delta. This region faces the Pacific Ocean, the east coast of China and backed by Anhui and Jiangxi Province.

Transportation and Communication

Nanjing is an important hub for transportation and communication. The Transportation networks included railways, highways, airways, waterways and pipelines. These five methods of transportation form a large capacity of three dimensional transportation networks. Nanjing's modern communication networks offer programmable control telephones, mobile communication, digital communication, microwaves, satellite and optical fiber communication.

Science and Education

Nanjing's higher education and science research bases are ranked 4th in China. Nanjing contains: 38 colleges(not including military school), 440,000 enrolled students(Year 2005), 640 R&D organization, 75 academicians and 400,000 researching professionals. Higher education in Nanjing has helped the city to create a community of talented professionals in the field of science and technology. Nanjing an important industrial base, has five pillars of industry: Mechanical, Electronic, Automotive, Petrochemical and Steel & Iron. Nanjing plays an important role as a commercial city of the Yangtze River Delta bringing in an annual profit of social consumer goods putting Nanjing at the top ten leading position in domestic urban areas, Nanjing ranks No. 8 of the China Mainland Best Commercial Cities selected by Forbes(Year 2005).
