2006, in Kaoshiung, 350 kilometers (217 miles) southwest of Taipei. The tanker
ran aground in stormy seas swollen by typhoon Chanchu. The typhoon, the
strongest ever reported in the South China Sea in May, was expected to pass
between Hong Kong and Taiwan on Wednesday and slam into Guangdong province
