May 8, 2006. China's stock market surged to its highest level in nearly two
years after a yearlong moratorium on new share sales by companies
already traded on its exchanges was lifted. The composite index of the
Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 1,489.53 points on Monday, up 49.31 points
from the previous close, and the component index on the Shenzhen Stock
Exchange closed at 4,012.31 points, up 164.21 points from the previous close.
