China will restrict the use of a single sperm donation to impregnate no more than five women in an effort to control the commercial use of assisted reproductive technology.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Health, sperm banks are required to record detailed information on how they use donated sperm. It prohibits them from providing sperm to unauthorized ART institutions or from using it for commercial purposes. As of April 1, 64 institutions were authorized to offer ART-related services, and seven institutions have established sperm banks.
