Jorma Ollila, chairman and former chief executive officer of Nokia Updated: 2007-01-08 08:03 Jorma Ollila believes the best move the world's largest mobile phone
firm by subscribers made in China was investing early and heavily into
manufacturing and research and development (R&D) Nokia first entered
China as the firm's entry point into Asia. It was also a quick learner and
trendsetter in China, though it took some heavy spending to achieve that status,
Ollila says. By the end of 2005, Nokia had invested a total of 3.3 billion
euros in China and had set up a number of R&D facilities. An improved
distribution network was also crucial for Nokia's success here. Before 2003,
its' retail coverage spanned only 50 cities. Today it covers over
300.
