IPR authorities in China received over 1 million new trademark applications last year, said Tian Lipu, director of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), at a press conference at the State Council Information Office.

Tian said that in 2010, the country received more than 1.22 million patent applications, and that Chinese applicants also submitted 12,337 patent applications abroad last year under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. These applicants were the fourth largest group in the world to do so last year.

IPR authorities in China handled 1,077 patent dispute cases and solved 728 counterfeit cases last year, Tian said.

China has been implementing a special crackdown on IPR violations since last October, with a focus on copyrighted and counterfeited trademarks and products, the most common targets of IPR criminals, Tian said.
