The picturesque Gulang Island is one of the best leisure resorts for both locals and tourists.

Xiamen, a modern international port city on the southern coastline of Fujian, is renowned throughout China for its high living standards and thriving business environment.

The city and its surrounding countryside are also famous as the ancestral home for many overseas Chinese. Back in the 1980s, the region was also one of China's earliest special economic zones. It covers an area of more than 1,500 sq km and has a population of 2.5 million.

With its mellow climate, enchanting scenery and excellent environment, Xiamen has established itself as an ideal place to live. Its success in this sphere has seen it win a number of plaudits, most notably a UN habitat award.

Since the reform and opening-up program began in the late 1970s, Xiamen has optimized its urban and industrial infrastructure and invested in its living environment, with a vision of becoming an ideal place for both living and working.

China's opening-up and reform policies injected new vigor into the region's development and have substantially raised both its productivity and competitiveness over the past three decades.

In 2008, the city's gross domestic product (GDP) exceeded 156 billion yuan, an increase of 11.1 percent year-on-year. In 2010, the per capita GDP is expected to rise to $14,000.

Xiamen now boasts one of the most vibrant economies on the east coast of China. In order to build on this success, the city now aims to establish itself as a thriving hub for shipping, logistics, finance, commerce, tourism, convention, exhibition, culture and education.

Xiamen prides itself on being one of the most competitive cities in China. It was ranked No 9 among the country's 200 large and medium-sized cities in terms of comprehensive competitiveness in 2005.

It was also among the top 20 Chinese cities in terms of investment environment and government efficiency, according to a survey of Chinese and overseas businesses.
