Three die in building collapse

Three construction workers are dead and two are injured after a building collapse in Daxing district.

The district government said the four-storey building in Yinghai town collapsed as workers installed boards in the structure on Wednesday at 2.30 pm.

Two workers were killed instantly and three others were buried underneath the rubble.

Nearby villagers and other workers immediately began searching for the buried workers.

The three injured men were removed from the debris and taken to Daxing People's Hospital for emergency treatment.

One man died yesterday, the government said.

The remaining two men are cousins named Meng Jiabin, 32, who suffered head injuries, and Meng Jiakuo, 19, who broke his left arm, pelvis and suffered lacerations, the hospital said.

"It was like a sudden earthquake. I fell down from the third floor and lost feeling in my left arm and leg, I was unable to move when I was lying on the ground," Meng Jiakuo told The Beijing News.

In a statement released to METRO yesterday, the government said it is investigating the building collapse.

"Upon initial investigation, this construction project is illegal and the building contractor has neither qualification nor permit procedures to start the building.".

The government said the compound were the building was under construction was rented to an individual entrepreneur in 2008.

"We are investigating the details of the building collapse and the confirmed information will be released after we make everything clear," a government press officer said.
