Huawei Submarine, a joint venture between Chinese flagship telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies and UK-based marine engineering company Global Marine Systems, has won a contract to build a undersea cable project in Tunis.

The 170 km undersea cable linking Tunis and Italy is likely to be completed by the end of this year.

The contract marks a major deal for Huawei which launched the joint venture with Global Marine last December to take advantage of the global undersea network market where annual spending will average $2 billion in four years, according to telecom research firm T Soja and Associates Inc.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.
