China to launch special fund to deal with e-waste

The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has formally released rules for the management of e-waste in the country.

The ruels, which come into effect from Jan 1, 2011, are expected to affect most electronics manufactures and sellers in the country, as China has become a major manufacturing hub and market for electronics goods.

The rules have specified that the nation would set up a special fund to subsidize the costs of dealing with e-waste. Manufacturers, consignees of imported electronics products or their agents are required to contribute to the fund, the Cabinet direction said, without elaborating.
