The 2nd Yantai International Wine Festival launched

Updated: 2008-09-23 18:52 The opening ceremony of the Second Yantai International Wine Festival and the Tenth International Fruit/Vegetable/Food Exposition was held in Yantai on September 23, putting the costal city in China's Shandong Province in the world spotlight again.
Participants include guests and business people from over 20 countries and regions, including 400 enterprises and 110 business groups, among which are 83 oversea groups with 2300 business people. The exhibition booths total over 1,030, including over 200 for foreign companies and institutions. "Yantai is a city of charm and promising potential. The Second Yantai International Wine Festival will further put forward the cooperation between Yantai and the world wine industry", said Peter Hayes, President of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) at the opening. World leading enterprises in the wine industry like Carole from the United States, Quality Spirits International Limited (QSI) from the United Kingdom, Karikari Estate from New Zealand, are joined by Changyu, Great Wall and Nanshan Chateau from home at the festival. Hernan Celis Calonge from Chile is Vice President of the Chamber of Production and Commerce of Concepcion. He and his colleagues are looking forward to technical cooperation from the festival. "Every country produces its wine in a particular flavor, the wine here in China tastes different from that of Chile, but it tastes good and I like it", said Hernan Celis Calonge after trying a glass of Chinese wine. Over 300 enterprises in the fruit and vegetable industry from home and abroad are participating in the exposition, including companies like Wal-Mart, Carrefour, and Jusco, who have shown great interest in purchasing new products. Contracts and agreements achieved during the exposition will total $600 million, and the import and export transactions are predicted at $700 million. Domestic transactions will pass 900 million yuan ($131 million). Contracts for 29 investment projects worth $3 billion will be signed during the exposition. Yantai, the only city in Asia named as an "International Wine and Vine City" by the OIV, boasts 150, 000 Mu (10,000 hectares) of vine area and 140 wine companies, the production of which total over 200,000 tons, covering half of the total in the country's wine industry. The city is also China's largest base for fruit and vegetable exporting, with 3.45 million tons of fruit and 3.6 million tons of vegetable produced annually.
