Wenchuan roads are still blocked
By Tu Lei (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2008-05-15 14:20 As of yesterday at 6 pm, roads up to 50 kilometers away from the Wenchuan area, the earthquake's epicenter in the northwestern part of Sichuan Province, are still blocked as environmental elements such as landslides prevent traffic flows, according to the Ministry of Communications' website. The east line along the No 302 provincial road from Beichuan to Mao county is still under rush for repair, while some 40 kilometers away from Wenchuan along the No 317 national road is another block and the 57-kilometer highway from Yingxiu to Wenchuan is badly damaged. The repair work is tough, said the website. Local transportation departments have allocated more than 400 repair machines and 5,000 staff to repair damaged roads from the East, South, West and North directions, said Vice-Minister of Communications Feng Zhenglin at yesterday's news conference held by the State Council Information Office. Feng added all the expressways in Sichuan Province are operational and the main highways running through Chengdu, Deyang, Mianyang and Ya'an have resumed traffic.
