HK's metal export up 56.3% in Q1

Updated: 2008-05-09 14:22 Six major industries accounted for 77 percent of Hong Kong's total domestic export value in the first quarter, with a 56.3 percent surge in the basic metals and fabricated metal products category, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said Thursday. The 6 major industries are textiles, consumer electrical and electronic products, apparel, chemicals and chemical products, basic metals and fabricated metal products, as well as machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components. The total domestic export value of the basic metals and fabricated metal products was at HK$2.3 billion ($294.87 million) after the surge. The domestic export of machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components fell 14.5 percent year on year to HK$2.2 billion in the first quarter, while that of textiles went down 14.4 percent to HK$3.7 billion. For consumer electrical and electronic products the domestic export value dipped 3 percent to HK$2.9 billion and wearing apparel fell 1.5 percent to HK$2.8 billion. Domestic export of chemicals and chemical products rose 11.9 percent to HK$2.6 billion, while that of paper and paper products, printing and publishing fell 20.6 percent to HK$1 billion.
