Passenger vehicle sales up 24% in first 8 months

Automobile manufacturers in China sold 4.02 million passenger vehicles in the first eight months of this year, up 24.09 percent over the same period of last year, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in its latest monthly report.

Of this, 481,300 units were sold in August, up 5.29 percent over the previous month, and 26.77 percent year-on-year.

For the January-August period, sales of sedans jumped 26.31 percent year-on-year to 3.01 million units, sports-utility vehicles soared 49.78 percent to 217,200 units, while multi-purpose vehicles went up 20.48 percent to 143,500 units.

The top 10 sedan brands, with sales totaling 989,400 units, included Santana (Shanghai Volkswagen), Jetta (FAW-Volkswagen), Buick Excelle (Shanghai General Motors), Camry (Guangzhou Honda), QQ (Anhui Chery), and Xiali (FAW Tianjin).
