International jewelry giant Cartier is suing the a well-known local jewelry producer and retailer for allegedly violating its leopardtrademark.

The local company told a court yesterday that the product in question isn't shaped like a leopard, however. It is a dragon.

Cartier International B.V. is seeking more than 220,000 yuan (US$28,497) in compensation fromShanghaiLao Feng Xiang Jewelry Store, the retailer, and Shanghai Lao Feng Xiang Co Ltd, the producer.

The two sides told the Huangpu District People's Court they are willing to accept court mediation to solve the dispute.

Cartier, which was founded in 1847, said the State Trademark Administration approved a series of its trademarks in China, including the English name "Cartier," the Chinese translation of Cartier, and an image trademark for its leopard symbol.

The administration included Cartier on a list of trademarks under key state protection in 2000 and approved Cartier as a famous trademark in 2004.

In June 2006, Cartier found the Lao Feng Xiang jewelry store on Fuyou Road was selling a leopard-shaped leather belt buckle that looked like its trademark.
