Full speed ahead
(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-04-23 16:04 Of all these means of transport, the railway has always been regarded as a major artery. During this year's Spring Festival, the trains transported more than 4 million passengers a day on the average nationwide. The number of trips made by those traveling by rail makes up about 7 percent of the transport volume. In terms of long-distance travel, the percentage is much higher. Not just cutting travel time between major cities, this time the increase in speed has considerably cut travel time within regions, such as around Bohai Sea, Yangtze Delta and Pearl River Delta. The travel time from East China's Shanghai to Central China's Changsha has been cut by nearly 7 hours. The increased convenience should help take pressure off the highways. Of course, the gain in railway speed will also intensify competition among rail, highway and air transport. Each sector will have to compete with better and more convenient service. As a result, the public should ultimately benefit with the overall improvement of service on all transport. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
