Demand for special vehicles in 2006-2010
By Su Yue (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-02-08 14:21 Dump vehicles
With growing investment in China's infrastructure construction, the transportation of building materials is expected to experience a continuous increase. The annual demand for dump vehicles will be expanded on the current figure of 80,000 units, and the proportion of large tippers will be on the rise.
Prime movers
The rapid development of China's highways and high-grade roads has pushed up the demand for large volume semi-trailer vehicles. The demand for semi-trailer towing vehicles is also expected to increase at an annual growth rate of 12 percent from 40,000 units in 2002. Trailers with large power and long-distance transportation vehicles will be in urgent need.
Box trucks
Due to the growth in the total output and shipment volume of meat, frozen food, cold beverages, dairy products and fresh fruits, the demand for refrigerated vans and insulated vans will be continuously on the rise. The annual demand for post vans and other common-commodity vans is expected to reach 6,000 to 7,000 units.
Tankers
With the development of the oil refining industry in western China, the demand for large oil tankers will also rise. The demand for large semi-trailer oil tankers will increase at a faster pace.
Bulk cement tanker and concrete mixer trucks
The annual demand for these two types is expected to reach 5,000 units. Due to the relatively low chassis reliability of homemade vehicles, China still needs to import 1,000 to 1,500 units of chassis for mixer trucks from South Korea and Japan.
Vehicles for public utilities
Such vehicles include field service trucks, road cleaning vehicles, refuse collectors, tumbrel tankers, sewage cleaners, post vehicles, street flushers, and cleaners for highrise buildings. The total demand is expected to reach 35,000 to 40,000 units annually.
Highway maintenance vehicles
Heavy-duty vehicles have become the mainstream for highway transportation. With the continuous expansion of highways in western China, maintenance vehicles including large road wreckers, pavement maintenance trucks, cleaning vehicles, rescue trailers, and rescue vehicles equipped with large hoists will have good market potential.
Fire-fighting vehicles
China has a large number of fire-fighting vehicles, and 69.2 percent of them are fire tankers. There is currently a shortage of specialized fire-fighting vehicles, which currently account for only 10 percent of the total. Specialized fire-fighting vehicles are differentiated from commonly used vehicles such as fire tankers, foam vehicles and powder vehicles. The annual demand for fire tankers is 6,000 to 8,000 units.
Vehicles for medical service
Such vehicles include ambulances, blood collection vehicles, epidemic prevention vehicles and chemical analysis vans. According to the plans of the Ministry of Health, the annual demand for medical service vehicles is 25,000 to 30,000 units, among which, about 4,000 units are ambulances and 300 units are blood collection vans.
Cash transport vans
The current annual demand for cash transport vans is about 3,000 units.
Oil field vehicles
China's non-desert oil fields need such special vehicles as large well-cementing vehicles, drill trucks, and well maintenance vehicles. The annual demand is 1,000 to 1,200 units.
Airport vehicles
China's western development drive demands the construction of a number of airports. A huge number of special-purpose vehicles are needed for the new airports. They include baggage cars, food supply vehicles, large refuellers, aircraft tractors and fire-fighting vehicles. Except for the large fire-fighting vehicles specially used for airports, currently all other types of airport vehicles can be manufactured by domestic producers. However, there is still a lot of room for improvements for China's large refuellers in terms of technology and performance. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
