Whatever the occasion, alcohol is never far away. When men are sad, they need a drink: "jie jiu jiao chou" (借酒浇愁, use alcohol to drown sorrow); when they are happy, they also drink: "jiu bu zui ren ren zi zui" (酒不醉人人自醉, wine not intoxicate people, people intoxicate themselves); when they are timid, they drink: "jiu zhuang song ren dan" (酒壮怂人胆, alcohol emboldens timid person); and when they meet good friends, it's surely time to drink: "jiu feng zhi ji qian bei shao" (酒逢知己千杯少, alcohol meet bosom friends a thousand cups are too few). So they all have a bunch of "jiu rou peng you" (酒肉朋友, wine-and-meat friend: fair-weather friend), and alcohol has turned some men into "jiu nang fan dai" (酒囊饭袋, wine pot and rice bag: good-for-nothing), or "jiu se zhi tu" (酒色之徒, wine and woman follower: a debauchee). And after drinking, "jiu hou tu zhen yan" (酒后吐真言, wine after spit truthful words: people speak the truth when they're drunk).
