BEIJING - China's February lottery sales rose 30.2 percent year on year to 11.29 billion yuan ($1.72 billion), said the Ministry of Finance on Friday.

Sales in the first two months of the year reached 27.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 27.8 percent, the ministry said in an online statement.

Sales of welfare lottery tickets jumped 31.9 percent to 6.56 billion yuan while sales of sports lottery tickets rose 28 percent to 4.73 billion yuan, said the statement.

The surge in sales came as new quiz-type lottery games went on sale in about 30 provinces across China and with the expansion of trial sales of the welfare lottery's online games, it said.

According to China's Regulations on Lottery Management, the money raised through lotteries is divided into three parts: the jackpot, lottery management fees, and lottery public funds.
