Hong Kong stocks close 0.44% lower -- August 23

HONG KONG - Hong Kong stocks closed down 92.81 points, or 0.44 percent, at 20,889.01 on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index opened down at 20,963.25 and reached as high as 21,035.01 before closing the day's session.

Turnover totaled HK$46.39 billion compared with Friday 's HK$56.08 billion.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index lost 109.28 points, or 0. 93 percent, to close at 11,670.39.

Three of four sub-indices ended down.

The utilities sub-index rose 1.08 percent, while the commerce and industry lost 0.72 percent; the finance, 0.44 percent; the properties, 0.22 percent.

Heavyweight HSBC, shed 0.26 percent to close at HK$77.15.

Its local unit Hang Seng Bank moved up 0.65 percent to HK$107.90.

China Mobile lost 1.03 percent to HK$81.95.

Chinese mainland lenders were all losers.

Bank of China down 0. 50 percent to HK$4.01.

Bank of Communications down 1.05 percent to HK$8.47.

ICBC ended down 0.35 percent to HK$5.63.

China Construction Bank down 1.07 percent to HK$6.47.

As for local developers, Cheung Kong, the flagship of Hong Kong 's richest man Li Ka-shing, dipped 0.30 percent to HK$99.25.

SHK Properties, the leading residential housing developer in Hong Kong, went down 0.27 percent to HK$111.60.

Henderson Land shed 0.10 percent to HK$47.95.

PetroChina lost 0.58 percent to HK$8.62, offshore oil producer CNOOC down 0.60 percent to HK$13.18. Sinopec gave up 1.57 percent at HK$6.26.
