Hong Kong stocks close 0.59% lower

HONG KONG - Hong Kong stocks Wednesday closed down 119.91 points, or 0.59 percent, at 20,128.99, tracking losses on Wall Street overnight.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index opened 1.3 percent lower at 19, 985.72 and fluctuated between 20,143.16 and 19,971.27 before closing the day's session.

Turnover totaled HK$55.55 billion compared with Tuesday's HK$59.05 billion.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 69.96 points, or 0. 61 percent, to close at 11,466.24.

Two of four sub-indices went down. The properties sub-index lost 1.19 percent, the finance down 1.15 percent. The utilities sub-index and the commerce and industry rose 0.75 percent and 0.1 percent respectively.

Heavyweight HSBC, down 1.09 percent to close at HK$72.65. Its local unit Hang Seng Bank retreated 0.48 percent to HK$104.60. China Mobile moved up 0.71 percent to HK$ 78.20.

Chinese mainland lenders closed down. Bank of China ended flat at HK$3.97, ICBC, fell 0.69 percent to HK$5.72, China Construction Bank, down 0.46 percent to HK$6.34, Bank of Communications, down 1.43 percent to HK$8.29.

As for local developers, Cheung Kong, the flagship of Hong Kong's richest man Li Ka-shing, dropped 0.82 percent to HK$90.40. SHK Properties, the leading residential housing developer in Hong Kong, lost 0.83 percent to HK$107.40. Henderson Land went down 1.71 percent to HK$46.00.

PetroChina added 0.34 percent to HK$ 8.77, offshore oil producer CNOOC edged up 0.3 percent to HK$13.38, while Sinopec lost 0.63 percent at HK$6.35. (HK$7.784=$1)
