Windows Live Messenger, widely known as "MSN Messenger", saw massive malfunctions on Tuesday. Users from all over the country noticed that their friends, coworkers and relatives saw them as "offline" while they were actually logged on, the Beijing Times reported Wednesday.

"I tried to change my status to available, busy or on leave, but still it didn't help", a user surnamed Liu said. Users were able to chat through MSN, but had trouble sending files.

A source with MSN China said the company had noticed the problems and that since similar incidents were also detected elsewhere in the world, it reported the incident to its US headquarters and was awaiting a solution by the MSN operation team.

Staff members at chinadaily.com.cn also encountered the problems Tuesday, but found the messenger service had returned to normal this morning.

In July and December, massive malfunctions of the messenger service similar to the latest incident were reported, but back then they were considered by MSN China to be "isolated cases".
