China's higher education and academic research is threatened by bureaucratization and corruption and lacks innovation and vitality, a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC) said.

Ye Qing, deputy chief of Hubei Bureau of Statistics, made the remark in his proposal to the NPC, the Beijing News reported.

Ye said the input and output of China's higher education system is severely imbalanced and corruption in academic circles is deeply-rooted.

He also pointed out the English education in many colleges and universities lagged far behind the reality as many college students who wanted to pursue further education abroad or in China had to be reeducated at English educational organizations such as the New Oriental School.

The way to solve the problems in China's higher education is to bring in a competitive mechanism involving diversified competitors. The participants can be private or State-owned and it can be domestic, foreign or joint venture.
