Hong Kong's retail sales fell in January from a year earlier as the timing of the Lunar New Year holiday reduced demand for food, electronics and clothes.

Sales by value declined 1.3 percent after jumping a revised 11.6 percent in December, the government said yesterday on its Website. Hong Kong's jobless rate is at a six-year low as the city benefits from proximity to China's mainland. That's pushing wages and bonuses higher and boosting spending. Financial Secretary Henry Tang gave consumption a boost on Wednesday by cutting taxes.
