Light bus makers forge ahead

In 2006 China's light bus industry registered more than ten percent of sales growth compared to the previous year. The performance of the six major players in the industry  in terms of sales in 2006 varied and they face different tasks in 2007.

Brilliance Jinbei unshakeable as top dog
By December 14, 2006, Jinbei light bus sales of the Shenyang Brilliance Jinbei Automotive Co Ltd had topped 53,280 units, strengthening the bus maker's top position with a market share of 40 percent.

Technological innovation has been highlighted by Brilliance Jinbei. In 2006 the Jinbei Haise series achieved several technological breakthroughs. The two new 4RB2 and 4G22D4 engines met the China III emission standard. The adoption of Bosch Group's anti-lock braking system and electric brakeforce distribution system helped ensure safety and stability for the buses. Brilliance Jinbei also displayed a new bus model with high technical content at the 2006 Beijing auto show, showing off its advantages in professional technological refitting.

Beiqi Foton faces challenges for its edge in diesel models
In the first 11 months of 2006 Foton View light bus sales of Beiqi Foton Motor Co Ltd exceeded 12,000, coming in fourth in the industry. The Foton View currently has the widest array of diesel light bus models, with engine displacements ranging from 2.2 to 2.7 liters and prices from 50,000 yuan (US$6,435) to more than 100,000 yuan. The diesel-powered View light bus is the first model of its kind in the less-than-80,000-yuan segment and has ranked among the forefront in terms of sales and market share.
