Binhai: Tianjin's 51.4% economic growth provider

China's development of Tianjin's Binhai economic zone contributed 51.4 percent of the city's economic growth in 2006, the first year it was included in the nation's development and strategy plan, Xinhua news agency reported.

Manufacturing in the economic zone amounted to 196 billion yuan (US$25 billion) last year, rising 20.2 percent, Tianjin's statistics department and Binhai's management committee said. Tianjin's 2006 fiscal revenue was 38 billion yuan, 31.7 percent higher than the previous year. Exports rose 22.5 percent to US$22.6 billion, it reported. Electronics and communications gained 23 percent to 185 billion yuan, making up 35.6 percent of Binhai's total industry.
