A sanitary service station was set up in each village with the financial help of the city's government. Doctors and nurses there are granted a government subsidy of about 800 yuan (US$102.56) a month. The practice won acclaim from the Guangdong provincial government which decided to spread the program to other rural areas in the province, Li Ruqiu, acting mayor of Huizhou, said on Friday.
More than 70 percent of villagers have participated in the medical assistance network, said Li.
In addition, tuition fees are waived for primary and junior middle school students in rural areas of Huizhou. Tuition fees are waived for only children, girls who have one or more sisters and children from poverty-stricken families in the city's rural areas. They also receive free materials for their nine year compulsory education, said Li.
