IKEA, the world's largest furniture retailer, opened its fourth outlet in China on Wednesday at a new store in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern Sichuan province.

The outlet will stock more than 6,000 items, including kitchen and bathroom items, and furniture.

"It is our first step into western China, as the region, especially Chengdu, boasts great business potential," said Ingvar Kamprad, founder of the Sweden-based IKEA, on an earlier visit to the city.

IKEA entered China in 1998 and already has outlets in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. The Beijing store is the second largest IKEA outlet in the world.

With 235 outlets in 34 countries and regions, IKEA recorded a total global turnover of 14.8 billion euros last year.
