Taiwan enjoys ballooning trade surplus with mainland

Taiwan had a 54.11 billion U.S. dollars trade surplus with China's mainland in the first ten months of the year, according to the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Department of the Ministry of Commerce.

The mainland exported 16.96 billion U.S. dollars worth of products to Taiwan from January to October, a rise of 27.1 percent over the same 2005 period, while import from Taiwan totaled 71.07billion dollars, up 18.9 percent.

The trade surplus for Taiwan in January-October rose 16.6 percent over the same period of last year.

According to the ministry, the mainland approved 2,932 Taiwan-funded projects in the first ten months, down 6.6 percent from the same period last year. Actual use of Taiwan capital slipped 1.2 percent to 1.7 billion dollars in this period.

As of the end of October, a total of 71,027 Taiwan-funded projects were approved by the mainland, while the total actual use of Taiwan capital reached 43.46 billion dollars.
