Global leading industry pageant, CONEXPO Asia 2006, organized by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), opened in Beijing on Monday, introducing global leading construction industry suppliers to the fast-growing Chinese market.

This is the first time that CONEXPO has moved into Asia. Officials with the AEM said that CONEXPO Asia will showcase manufacturers of latest equipment, products and services related to the construction industry in Asia.

More than 190 domestic and overseas construction industry suppliers appeared at the exposition, with over 80 companies from the United States.

The exposition is an important event to balance Sino-US bilateral trade, said Zhang Yujing, Executive Vice President of the China Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME).

China has become a market focus for more and more overseas construction manufacturers due to its gigantic construction market in both the urban and the rural regions.

Statistics with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said China has become one of the most important construction machinery markets in the world behind the United States, European Union and Japan, with its market value reaching 15.5 billion US dollars in 2005.

During the 10th Five-Year-Plan period, China's total investment in construction machinery industry amounted to 63.7 billion dollars, with the imports of construction machinery reaching 14.1 billion dollars.

CONEXPO Asia 2006 ends on May 18. According to the AEM, the CONEXPO Asia 2007 is also planning to open in Beijing.

The AEM is an international trade and business development resource for companies that manufacture equipment, products and services used worldwide in the construction, agricultural, mining, forestry and utility industries.

In November 1997, the AEM opened its first overseas branch office in Beijing to help members effectively do business in the promising China market.
