Dongshan Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved as
state-level deveopment zone in January 1993. The zone now has a developed
area of 3.5 square kilometers.
Geographical
Location
Dongshan Economic & Technological Development Zone is
China's island-based national economic & technological development zone.
Located at the southern tip of Fujian Province and between the two special
economic zones of Xiamen and Shantou, it is 141 nautical miles west of Gaoxiong
(Kaohsiung), and 210 nautical miles north of Hong Kong. It is a first-class
national open port as well as the nearest port from the mainland to Taiwan.
Dongshan is inhabited by returned overseas Chinese and their relatives and is
one of the ancestral homes of Taiwan compatriots.
Climate
Surrounded by sea, Dongshan is in a subtropical
oceanic climate. It enjoys warm winters and cool summers and it is a frost-free
island. Temperature averages 13.1 degree centigrade in January and 27.3 degree
centigrade in July. Annual rainfall averages 1032 millimeters.
Communication and
Transportation
Harbor
Dongshan Port has a 5000-tonnage
general cargo dock and a 3000-tonnage one, two 5000-tonnage specialized silicon
ore dock, and a 3000-tonnage petroleum and liquid dock, a 1000-tonnage
specialized dock for Taiwan vessels. There is another 25000-tonnage general
cargo and container cargo dock being constructed for scheduled voyages to Hong
Kong.
Road
Three main highways on the island run
through the zone and join No. 324 National Highway and Zhangxian Highway (under
construction) respectively at Bachimen Sea Wall and Dachan Bridge.
Airport
90 kilometers away from Shantou Airport
and 100 kilometers from Xiamen Airport.
Natural Resources
Dongshan is an important tourism area
in Fujian. It is also endowed with abundant resources of agricultural products
and silicon ore. Reserve of silicon ore of good quality exceeds 200 million tons
and is the largest of its kind in Asia.
Industrial Structure
Electronics, food, light industry,
and new building materials are the pillar industries.
Investment Priorities
The Zone encourages investment in
high-tech and manufacturing projects and tertiary industry projects. Investment
is welcome to new building materials, port warehousing, bond warehouse,
electronics, pollution-free industry, light industry, textile industry, food,
processing and manufacturing, medicine, bio-engineering and etc.
