Zhengzhou is playing an important role in the rise of the Central China region.

The State Council has positioned Zhengzhou as a key city in Central China, according to sources of the Zhengzhou municipal government.

Echoing the central government's positioning, Zhengzhou has designed a strategic goal to develop itself into a key regional centre, an important commercial city and a main transportation hub in China before 2020.

In realizing its goal, Zhengzhou enjoys many advantages.

Dubbed "thoroughfare for 10 provinces," Zhengzhou is a key trade and commercial city and an important central city for the New Eurasia Bridge.

At the same time, the country's gigantic "West-East Gas Pipeline" and "South-North Water Diversification" projects go through the city.

Currently, Zhengzhou exercises jurisdiction over six districts, five cities, one county and three national-level development zones.

With a total population of 7.16 million, the city has a total area of 7,446.2 square kilometres, of which 1,010.3 square kilometres are urban areas.

The city is rich in natural resources. Within its territory, 34 kinds of mineral reserves are found.

In addition, Zhengzhou is also one of China's famous cities with a long history and rich cultural heritage, a nationally acclaimed clean city, an excellent tourism destination, and advanced city in science and technology development.

In 2005, Zhengzhou notched up 165 billion yuan (US$20.57 billion) in total output value and 15.1 billion yuan (US$1.88 billion) in local fiscal revenues.
