Zhengzhou is playing an important role in the rise of the Central China
region.
The State Council has positioned Zhengzhou as a key city in
Central China, according to sources of the Zhengzhou municipal
government.
Echoing the central government's positioning, Zhengzhou has
designed a strategic goal to develop itself into a key regional centre, an
important commercial city and a main transportation hub in China before
2020.
In realizing its goal, Zhengzhou enjoys many
advantages.
Dubbed "thoroughfare for 10 provinces," Zhengzhou is a key
trade and commercial city and an important central city for the New Eurasia
Bridge.
At the same time, the country's gigantic "West-East Gas Pipeline"
and "South-North Water Diversification" projects go through the
city.
Currently, Zhengzhou exercises jurisdiction over six districts,
five cities, one county and three national-level development zones.
With
a total population of 7.16 million, the city has a total area of 7,446.2 square
kilometres, of which 1,010.3 square kilometres are urban areas.
The city
is rich in natural resources. Within its territory, 34 kinds of mineral reserves
are found.
In addition, Zhengzhou is also one of China's famous cities
with a long history and rich cultural heritage, a nationally acclaimed clean
city, an excellent tourism destination, and advanced city in science and
technology development.
In 2005, Zhengzhou notched up 165 billion yuan
(US$20.57 billion) in total output value and 15.1 billion yuan (US$1.88 billion)
in local fiscal revenues.
