NEW YORK -- At least nine people were killed after a cargo plane crashed near Louisville International Airport in the US state of Kentucky on Tuesday, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said in an interview with local media Wednesday morning.

He warned the numbers could climb as the investigation continues.

Earlier, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear posted on social media that at least seven were killed and 11 injured.

Passenger flights to and from Louisville are resuming, according to the airport's website.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the probe into the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday.

A UPS cargo plane bound for Honolulu crashed near the airport, the worldwide air hub for UPS, around 5:15 pm (2215 GMT) on Tuesday.
