"This year's first group of winter migrants totals over 200 birds, including bean geese, greater white-fronted geese and spot-billed ducks, with the ducks making up the largest number," said Hu Jiang, a migratory bird monitoring officer at the Poyang Lake Nature Reserve Administration.

"Smaller waterfowl usually arrive first, followed by larger wading birds later in the season."

At Wucheng, a well-known "migratory bird town" on the Poyang Lake reserve, official Wang Xiaolong also spotted an advance group of migratory birds.
