Rail network wraps up summer season with record passenger, freight volumes
China's summer railway travel season wrapped up on Sunday with record passenger and freight volumes, according to the China State Railway Group, the national railway operator, on Monday.
During the 62-day travel rush from July 1 to Sunday, the national railway network carried a total of 943 million passenger trips, up 4.7 percent year-on-year, setting a new high for the same period. Freight transport also set a new record and remained robust, with 702 million metric tons moved by national railways, an increase of 4.8 percent from a year earlier.
The company said railway services operated safely and smoothly throughout the period, meeting surging passenger demand while ensuring a steady flow of goods. The record figures highlight the expanding role of China's railways in facilitating travel and supporting economic activity during the busy summer season.
