China has officially announced the names of the mascots for the upcoming 12th World Congress on High-Speed Rail, set to open in Beijing on Tuesday, as the country prepares to showcase its growing influence in the global rail industry.

The mascots, inspired by China's iconic giant panda, are named "Fufu" and "Xinxin" in English, the organizing committee said on Sunday. Fufu, dressed as a high-speed train driver, represents "happiness through innovation and connectivity", while Xinxin, dressed as a train attendant, symbolizes "warm service and care", reflecting the theme of this year's congress: "High-Speed Rail: Innovation for a Better Life".

The two mascots also carry deeper cultural and linguistic meaning. Their names together echo the pronunciation of Fuxing, China's flagship high-speed train brand, and convey the idea of bringing happiness and warmth to people around the world through modern rail travel.

The mascots, which made their debut in November 2024, quickly gained popularity online among Chinese netizens. Their design integrates key elements of China's high-speed rail system and national identity. Fufu and Xinxin are portrayed in official uniforms worn by high-speed train operators and passenger service staff, further emphasizing the country's commitment to safety, efficiency, and passenger-centered service.

The names were selected through a global naming campaign that attracted more than 700 submissions. The final choices were determined after multiple rounds of expert evaluation.

The World Congress on High-Speed Rail, organized by China State Railway Group and the International Union of Railways, is a major international event in the rail industry, typically held every two to three years. It provides a platform for showcasing technological advancements and fostering global cooperation in high-speed rail.

This year's congress, which coincides with the 200th anniversary of railways worldwide, is expected to draw government officials, diplomats, corporate executives, and railway experts from various countries and international organizations. Participants will engage in high-level discussions, exhibitions, technical tours, and cultural exchange events focused on the future of high-speed rail and its role in improving global mobility.
