Suspect identified in firefighters ambush

Officials in the US state of Idaho have identified the man believed to have ignited a brush fire on Sunday and shot at the responding firefighters, killing two. The suspect, who apparently took his own life, was named as 20-year-old Wess Roley by Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris on Monday. A third firefighter was also injured in the incident, which occurred on Canfield Mountain, outside the city of Coeur d'Alene. Norris said investigators recovered a shotgun near Roley's body but were still searching for additional weapons he might have used. Fire crews, meanwhile, remained at the scene battling to contain flames still scorching Canfield Mountain.

Yoon defies summons in martial law probe

Former South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol on Tuesday risked arrest by skipping questioning by a special prosecutor investigating his Dec 3 martial law declaration, prompting the prosecutor to issue a new summons for Saturday. Yoon said he missed his Tuesday's appointment because he needed to prepare for a hearing later this week in an ongoing case. After Yoon failed to appear, the special prosecutor ordered him to attend questioning on Saturday. Yoon's lawyers did not immediately comment on the new summons, but Yonhap news agency said Yoon was expected to attend, with his lawyers asking prosecutors for a formal attendance request.

Kurdish PKK fighters to destroy weapons

Fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, will soon destroy their weapons as a "goodwill gesture" to signal their commitment to disarming after decades of conflict with Turkiye, two commanders said. "As a gesture of goodwill, a number of PKK fighters, who had taken part in fighting Turkish forces in recent years, will destroy or burn their weapons in a ceremony in the coming days," a commander said, requesting anonymity. The move was confirmed by another commander who also spoke to Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity. The group had declared an end to its armed campaign in May.
