Ni Qiang, a senior Communist Party official in Hainan province, is under investigation for suspected "serious violations of discipline and law", China's top anti-graft watchdog announced Wednesday.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission said in an online statement that Ni, a standing committee member and secretary-general of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee, is undergoing disciplinary review and investigation.

The longtime Hainan official previously held multiple roles in the province, including general manager and deputy party secretary of COSCO Shipping Boao. He later served in leadership positions in the Yangpu Economic Development Zone in Danzhou and as deputy Party secretary in Danzhou and Haikou.

In 2021, he was named Hainan's vice-governor before being promoted to the provincial party committee's standing committee in October 2023, where he took on the additional role of secretary-general.

The investigation follows a series of high-profile corruption cases in Hainan, including those of former provincial Party secretary Luo Baoming and former Haikou Party secretary Luo Zengbin.
