In 2025, Malaysia is chairing ASEAN. In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, the country's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke about the measures being taken within the association to preserve the environment.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the environmental agenda is a shared responsibility for all ASEAN member states.

"When I talk about environmental protection and supporting climate initiatives, it's not just about Malaysia. I mean, of course Malaysia is an oil-producing country; we take major steps. But all countries in ASEAN have adopted similar programmes," he said.

As an example, the Prime Minister highlighted the ASEAN power grid project.

"What does it mean? It shows the total commitment of these countries to shift from traditional fossil fuels to alternatives. It comes at a major cost, but we've decided that's the direction to go," he noted.

He stated that this is a common aspiration among all Southeast Asian nations.
