The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has urged local authorities to tighten their supervision of scenic spots and tourism facilities to eliminate possible risks threatening tourists' safety.

The ministry released the urgent notice to local authorities on Sunday night — during the May Day holiday, after four tour boats capsized in Qianxi, Guizhou province, due to sudden strong winds. Ten people were confirmed dead and 70 were injured in the accident.

According to the notice, local authorities are required to check scenic spots' cableways, entertainment facilities, vehicles and tour boats. Fire safety is also of paramount importance, especially in destinations or places with densely populated travelers.

Local authorities were also urged to closely monitor meteorological conditions and issue relevant warnings to the public in case of extreme weather. In addition, they are required to improve their ability to handle emergencies and make quick decisions to suspend operation of tourism facilities or scenic spots.

Furthermore, the ministry urged local authorities to warn tourists from joining entertainment events with high risks and persuade tourists not to visit untapped or undeveloped areas with possible dangers.
