Wuxi unveils measures to boost local film industry

Wuxi in Jiangsu province unveiled a set of policies on Tuesday aimed at boosting the development of its film industry.
The 20 specific measures, spanning 11 categories, are designed to enhance the entire film industry chain, from the inception of creative ideas to the final stages of production.
In a bid to support original content creation, the new policies offer substantial rewards for scripts that have received national or provincial accolades, with incentives reaching as high as 200,000 yuan ($27,500) and 100,000 yuan, respectively.
Film projects that procure award-winning scripts, complete filming and secure theatrical releases can receive up to 100,000 yuan in support.
During the production phase, projects designated as national or provincial key initiatives or those backed by national quality funds can access support of up to 20 million yuan, 7.5 million yuan, and 5 million yuan, respectively.
Moreover, the policies aim to boost incentives for production-related expenses, co-production services and post-production, with rewards reaching a maximum of 5 million yuan.
Wuxi is also emphasizing technological innovation in the film sector. The policies outline support for companies collaborating on critical core technologies, offering a maximum of 1.5 million yuan for projects investing over 1 million yuan in research and development.
Significant rewards of up to 20 million yuan are being allocated to establish film technology research institutions and key municipal and provincial laboratories.
For Wuxi film projects incorporating key technologies exceeding 5 million yuan, the highest support can reach 2 million yuan.
Also on Tuesday, the "2025 National Youth Playwright Plan "opened for entries. Until July 15, the plan is open to students in universities and research institutions nationwide to submit exceptional film scripts.
The initiative aims to empower young filmmakers to transform their movie ideas into masterpieces through financial assistance, creative nurturing and industry connections.
In recent years, Wuxi has established several key film and television bases, attracting over a thousand film and television cultural technology companies.
Since the inauguration of the Wuxi National Digital Film Industrial Park, the park has undertaken more than 2,100 film projects, achieving an output value of 8 billion yuan in 2024, marking a growth of 23 percent year-on-year.
