Nanjing Massacre survivor dies at age 92
Wu Xiuying, who survived the Nanjing Massacre, died on Friday at age 92, bringing the number of registered living survivors to 30, according to the Memorial Hall for the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders in Jiangsu province. The Nanjing Massacre occurred over a period of six weeks beginning on Dec 13, 1937, when Japanese troops captured the then Chinese capital. During that time, they killed approximately 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers in one of the most barbaric episodes of World War II. In 1937, during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, Wu's brother, who had enlisted in the army, went to the city with his unit and was never heard from again. In December, when the Japanese forces attacked Nanjing, they burned, killed and looted, forcing Wu's family to seek refuge on Mount Wutai in Nanjing and narrowly escape death. The documents on the massacre were listed by UNESCO in the Memory of the World Register in 2015.

According to a statement from the Chess and Cards Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, Chinese chess grand master Zhao Xinxin, along with Wang Yang and Zheng Weitong, received lifetime bans from the sport. Another grand master, Wang Kuo, and 33 others were banned for varying lengths of time, while four others were given circulated notices. The sanctions were the result of an investigation into the "Recording Gate" scandal that was launched in April 2023, with the findings disclosed on Sunday.
