Turbines up and running on offshore floating powerhouse

Ocean X, the world's largest floating wind power platform was put into operation in Yangjiang, Guangdong province on Dec 11, local authorities said.
Independently developed by Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy Group, the facility is the first in the world to mount two 8.3-megawatt offshore wind turbines on a single floating foundation.
With a displacement of 15,000 metric tons, Ocean X is located about 70 kilometers offshore. It is expected to generate about 54 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity every year, which is enough to meet the annual electricity demand of 30,000 three-member families.
During operation, the wind turbine blades soar to a height of 219 meters at their peak, spanning a maximum aerial width of around 369 meters, according to Mingyang Smart Energy Group.
