22 killed in stampede at philanthropic program
At least 22 people were killed in a stampede during a philanthropic initiative to distribute food items and vegetable oil to locals ahead of Christmas celebrations in Okija, a town in Nigeria's southeastern state of Anambra, the police said Sunday. Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the police in Anambra, said in a statement that "there were injured casualties receiving treatment at local hospitals" but did not give an exact figure, following the fatal incident on Saturday morning. He said an investigation was underway.

First nuclear reactor in 25 years added to grid
France connected the Flamanville 3 nuclear reactor to its grid on Saturday morning, state-run operator EDF said, in the first addition to the country's nuclear power network in 25 years. The reactor, which began operating in September ahead of the grid connection, is going online 12 years later than originally planned. The Flamanville 3 European Pressurized Reactor is France's largest at 1.6 gigawatts and one of the world's largest.
