Also, a trial version of A New English Course compiled by professor Li Guanyi was published in 1986, and its full version was used widely since 1992. It was one of the earliest and most influential English textbooks published after China's reform and opening-up, and is still widely used today, having a far-reaching influence in the country's English education sector.

SISU also announced the establishment of the School of Chinese Studies and Exchange on Monday. Chen Changlai, dean of the new college, said it aims to cultivate international students who know China well and are friendly with China, and also train sinologists for the future.

"This is of great significance to the Belt and Road Initiative, and we believe that SISU has its unique advantages for this," said Chen, adding that students from home and abroad will systematically study traditional, modern and contemporary Chinese language, culture and literature during their bachelor's, master's and PhD studies at the college.

Zhu Jianjun, vice-dean of the college, said the number of international students from countries and regions involved in the BRI, including Russia and some Southeast Asian countries, has increased significantly in recent years.

"We see that many of the international graduates, especially those who have completed graduate studies here, return to their home countries to work as language teachers, or join universities and enterprises engaged in research and exchanges related to China," he said.
