Report outlines project for visually impaired

China on Tuesday released a think tank report on a domestic public welfare project providing audio descriptions of films for the visually impaired, an effort to ensure equal access to culture. The report, titled "China's Efforts to Safeguard Cultural Rights for the Visually Impaired: Insights from the 'Cinema of Light' Public Welfare Initiative," was released in Chinese and English by the China Foundation for Human Rights Development and the National High-level Think Tank of Xinhua News Agency. "Cinema of Light", initiated by faculty members and students of the Communication University of China in 2017, produces replicable and distributable films with voice descriptions inserted during pauses in dialogue and sound effects, providing explanations of the visual content, emotions and meanings behind the scenes.

Rocket sends satellite into orbit from Xichang

China launched a Kuaizhou 1A carrier rocket on Wednesday afternoon from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, sending a remote-sensing satellite into space. The solid-propellant rocket blasted off at 12:46 pm from its launch vehicle and placed the Haishao 1, or Sea Sentinel 1, satellite into its preset orbit, according to China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, the State-owned space contractor that developed and built the launch vehicle. The company said in a news release that the satellite is equipped with synthetic aperture radar and is tasked with monitoring marine environments and sea targets.

Railway trips exceed record 4 billion mark

The number of passenger trips carried out by China's railway network exceeded 4 billion from January to November, marking the first time the annual passenger volume has surpassed the record-high mark, China State Railway Group announced on Wednesday. In a news release, the company said that as of this year, the total railway operating mileage nationwide has exceeded 160,000 kilometers, with high-speed railway operating mileage surpassing 46,000 km.
