Pact on no first use of nuke weapons mooted

Beijing released on Monday a working paper, calling on the nuclear-weapon states to adopt a "no first use" of nuclear weapons treaty. China encourages the five nuclear-weapon states to explore the conclusion of a treaty on the no first use of nuclear weapons or to issue a political statement on the issue, the Foreign Ministry said in the paper. Beijing has drafted four-point elements for discussion of a treaty or a statement, according to the paper. China calls on all parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to actively respond to and support its proposal, it said.

500 held for violence over job quotas

More than 500 people, including some opposition leaders, have been arrested over days of clashes in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka sparked by protests against job quotas, police said on Monday. Bangladesh's Supreme Court on Sunday scrapped most quotas for government jobs after nationwide action led by students spiralled into clashes.

3 dead, 6 injured in shooting at gathering

Three men were killed and at least six others were wounded in a morning shooting at a gathering in west Philadelphia, authorities said. Police said more than 100 people were present in the Carroll Park neighborhood when gunfire broke out just after 2 am on Sunday. Police said their preliminary information indicated "an exchange of gunfire between multiple parties" and shell casings of more than one caliber were recovered.
