Ex senior Xinjiang official arrested
Li Pengxin, a former senior official of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, has been arrested on suspicion of accepting bribes, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said in a statement on Friday. Li, who previously served as deputy secretary of Xinjiang's regional committee of the Communist Party of China, was expelled from the Party and dismissed from public office over serious violations of Party discipline and laws earlier this month.
Yangtze River sees first flood of 2024
China's Yangtze River is experiencing its 2024 "No 1 Flood", according to the Ministry of Water Resources, as the water level at Jiujiang hydrological station, one of the major monitoring spots for the mainstream's water level in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze, has risen to 20 meters, reaching the warning level at 2 pm on Friday. Affected by persistent heavy rainfall, multiple tributaries connected to Poyang and Dongting lakes, China's two largest freshwater lakes, have seen major flooding.
5 killed, 1 injured in traffic accident
Five people were killed and one other injured in a traffic accident in Lixian county, central China's Hunan province, local authorities said on Thursday. At around 3 pm on Thursday, a tank truck rolled over on a highway after hard braking and fell on a car, according to a preliminary investigation.
